Gua Sha: A Modernized Ancient Practice

This ancient Chinese technique has been taking the beauty industry by storm. It’s called Gua Sha, it's proven to reduce inflammation, stimulate blood flow, and tighten the skin.

Not only does this practice have amazing benefits for your skin, but it has been known to reduce anxiety, tension headaches, and release muscle tension.

Gua Shas are made with different varieties of crystals and stones like Jade, Rose Quartz, Lapis Lazuli, and even stainless steel.

Gua Shas Ancient History

Gua Sha has been dated back to 700 years ago in the Ming Dynasty for medicinal practices. Gua Sha was used to treat certain illnesses, alleviate pain, and release tension in the muscles. Qi, (pronounced as chi) is energy that flows through the body that must be flowing and balanced for optimal health.

They believe that if qi is stagnant, it becomes the root cause of many ailments and tensions. So, that is what the Gua Sha is for– to help promote qi’s fluidity and break up that stagnant energy that is causing physical distress.

The practice of Gua Sha has become a mainstream sensation in the past three years and has everyone raving about all of the benefits.

How Does Gua Sha Work?

Gua Sha works by scraping the skin with a Gua Sha tool made of either Jade, Stone, or Quarts. Although other materials have been known to show the same benefits, it’s up to the user to choose what their tool is made of.

By gently scraping the skin in outwards motions towards your lymph nodes, you drain all of the toxins that have stayed stagnant in your skin.

In doing so, you get a slimmer, tighter, more chiseled appearance. Not only does this rid the face of inflammation and toxins, but it also promotes better blood flow, which plays a big role in collagen (an essential protein for our skin health) production.

How to Use a Gua Sha Tool

First and foremost, it is important that you activate your lymph nodes. You can do this by massaging the nodes in your under arms. After doing so it is crucial that you apply a gel, lotion, oil, or even water to your face (do NOT do this on dry skin). The perfect time to do this would be during your skin care routine.

Take the Gua Sha and hold it flat against your skin starting from your chest up. Start dragging and apply pressure while doing this, start with either your right or left side and alternate after you finish. Make sure to scrape each area (jaw, neck, eyes, forehead etc.)  around 10 times for optimal results.

You can focus on problem areas as well like eye bags or jowls, just make sure you are always draining towards the lymph nodes, not away.

Gua Shas Many Benefits

Gua Sha is amazing for our skin. Not only does it help reduce inflammation, but it also helps increase collagen production. The result is a reduction in the appearance of crow's feet, frown lines, deep forehead wrinkles, and even lifts sagging skin.

Gua Shas ability to aid in toxin drainage directly impacts the skin’s overall health. Toxins accelerate our body’s natural aging process and slow down collagen regeneration.

The Takeaway

Gua Sha is a game changer for your skin transformation. With consistent use, you can really change the appearance of your skin, taking it from puffy, irritated, and dull to slim, lifted, and glowing. Not only is the skin's outward appearance improved, but the inward skin  health is improved due to the release of toxins.

So go ahead and pick up the Gua Sha, trust me– your skin and body will thank you for it!
